Pilates is a low-impact workout focusing on strengthening the core and improving posture and balance. There is a strong emphasis on breath awareness. Created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s, his aim was to find a system that would help the body to move with fluidity, ease and grace. Pilates exercises strengthen the whole body creating balanced muscular development whilst also promoting flexibility, centeredness and control. It is a very effective tool for rehabilitation from injury as well as being a great form of exercise.
Reformer
The reformer is a large piece of resistance equipment that utilises pulleys and graduated levels of springs to add resistance to the participants body weight when performing exercises. This is a great workout, but also highly effective for rehabilitation post injury, surgery, or for recovery from medical events such as strokes. Reformer appointments are currently available as private sessions.
Mat Classes
During mat classes, planks, side planks and abdominal exercises are used to strengthen muscles and the core. The arms, legs, and glutes are also targeted in this full body workout. Some equipment may also be used to vary the exercises such as therabands, balls, small weights or a pilates ring.
